You cannot transform yourself without first transforming your home.

Weakness, confidence, strength, peace, and the beginnings of failures start in the home. This is not some type of pyscho-analysis research and findings paper to make a point for counselors and mind-benders, it is practical observation from personal experience and witnessing how nutrition choices from home is the basis for success and failures.

Yesterday, I was sitting next to a co-worker during a mandatory meeting. Midway through a fairly interesting topic, she reaches into her purse and brought out a bag of flavored potato chips. (One of my past favorites I must add) and it brought back some comforting memories of aromas, flavors, and the familiar sound of crunching that brought my hormones to almost make my mouth say, “Can I try a piece?” But I knew better not to give in to the temptation as I recall the nutrition labels that list the salts, preservatives, and the empty calories that could add to the fat making process of a vulnerable body.

I would imagine that my co-worker’s pantry is probably filled with a party pack of chips that may or may have not been on sale at the neighborhood grocery store prominently displayed next to the entry way in a very cute cardboard marketing gimmick that made kids as well as adults turn to see the intriguing and delicious-looking, what I will coin as the “Snack Trap.”

These are the types of land mines and booby traps that are giving our grade school kids, teens, and adults called the “Metabolic Syndrome” that make us forget what our toes look like. If you haven’t noticed, I have already covered the psycho-analysis part of this writing where marketers find innocent ways for consumers to get products into your shopping cart, but that is left for another story where science and personal observation can change the way we see things to make healthy choices.

I am not nosy, but when we shop, my wife and I cannot help but look inconspicuously into other people’s shopping carts and find out what their household is having for snacks. Like I said, it is not stretching my neck to count all of someone’s calories, it is just a quick casual glance of what can be seen on those big wagons (by the way wagons are made as big as possible to load up more items for your disposable income).

It is just part our understanding of buying habits of choices and the importance of what we can do to try to keep people healthy. I tell you the truth, it was not that long ago that we too bought, “foods” that where high in sugar and low in everything else!

Our hope would be to help people (everyone who need and want to change) make more educated choices. To help them realize (and many do not) that what they consume has an effect on health, life, relationships, moods, and joy. Yes, there can be joy even without the croissants, ice cream, potato chips, milk chocolate and other inflammatory “make me happy” edibles.  I remember the times when I could not stop thinking about that Pumpkin Pie that I was going to eat for dessert and finish the crumbs the next day for breakfast! Those unhappy days are gone now and my insides are grateful.
