For most of my lifetime, I was conditioned to be reminded not to eat too much foods that contained saturated fats. Health officials said that foods like butter, meat, eggs, cheese, and other dairy products could, “clog my arteries” and if I continued to consume these types of foods, I could end up dead because of a heart attack.  For years, food manufacturers used labels that said, “Low Fat,” “No Fat,” “Less Fat,” “Reduced Fat,” “Vegetable Fat,” “No Animal Fat,” and ultimately, “Fat Free.” So, in place of the tasteless foods that lacked fat, it was replaced with refined sugars causing a world-wide obesity epidemic and ironically, more heart attacks! What the FAT?

In an article written by Authority Nutrition, humans have been consuming saturated fats from the time our ancestors new how to sharpen a tree branch to make spears and arrows. Here is a great article that explains new data and the importance of saturated fats and how cholesterol is vital for our bodies. For decades, food manufacturers made sure that we understood that saturated fat was bad. Just last week, a co-worker watched me eat a piece of steak for lunch and said to me, “Oh, you better watch out and not eat too much of that!” I believe that eating organic grass fed beef and foods that are derived from hormone-free and organic sources are beneficial.  I am positive that vegetarians and vegans would disagree with my assessment, but I do respect other nutritional approaches from my fellow health-conscience readers.

I only touched a little on saturated fats, but in and of itself, fats are a very broad macro nutrient that includes fish, plant-based, and nut fats. Make sure that we all stay far away from transfat and hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils that can cause adverse health issues. To make things clearer, I found a great article on fats that will give you more information so that you can make your own healthy decisions on your nutritional journey.
